After the introduction of Modern education in Ethiopia the first modern high school was founded in 1934 EC after the name of the emperor Haile Selassie the 1st. It was called ቀዳማዊ ኃይለ ሥላሴ. At this time, the enrollment capacity of the school was nearly 100 students in grade 9 and class size was 25 students.
In 1949 EC to 1956 EC the number of students from 9th grade to 12th grade was 450. The class size was 30 for 9th and 10th grade and 22 for 11th and 12th grade until 1956. After 1960 the school started working with American Government, specially the library was functioning by the aid of USA. Starting from 1963 peace corps from America were teaching in the School.
In 1966 E.C when the Dergue took Power, the name of the school was changed to Fasiledes comprehensive secondary school.
In 1994 EC under the new rule of EPRDF and its new educational policy, the school was changed in to preparatory school. The current enrollment capacity of the school is 2784 students of which 1325 male and 1459 female.
The population of Gondar according to the 2010 EC census is 371350 out of which 192903 are female and 178447 are male. To accommodate this the school has 39 class rooms, 1 library , 1 workshop , 4 computer centers , 3 science laboratories , 2 latrines, 2 lecture halls , 1 teacher’s café, 1 students café and playing field for foot ball, basketball and volleyball.
The ministry of education standard guideline recommends that the number of students per class rooms should be 40. Unfortunately the current class size in the school is more than 70 students per each class room. This obviously created difficulty in the teaching learning process which affects the quality and the outcome of the education. This problem by itself will create a lag among students compared with other better facilitated schools.
In order to meet the standard of ministry of education, the school should have 70 class rooms, way above the current 39 class rooms the school has.
This shortage of class rooms is further exacerbated by nearly collapsing rooms which will be out of service in the coming year.
Therefore there is a dire need for a project to address these problems.
This project has 3 distinct objectives.
First: renovation of the current class rooms.
Second: meeting the required classroom size set by the ministry of education.
Third: expansion of the capacity of the school for at least the coming 9 years.
As stipulated by this project the number of classrooms required by 2020 will be 94. Therefore to meet this need, the expansion of the school by building additional class rooms is a must.
